The way is a wandering dog from Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a golden heart. The stray dog had just given birth to a litter of puppies and was doing everything she could to care for them when she noticed someone else in need of assistance.
The way had always managed to survive on the streets, but now she had a lot of other mouths to feed, so she explored the neighborhood for whatever food she could find. She needed to hurry because it was winter in Argentina.
That’s when Way stumbled upon a newborn human infant in an alley that had evidently been abandoned by its mother. The dog’s maternal instincts kicked in, and she realized the infant needed warmth.
So Way dashed back to her puppies and brought them one by one around the newborn infant. She then wrapped her body as tightly as she could around her puppies.
The next morning, a local called Alejandria Griffin listened to the newborn’s sobs. And when she walked outside to investigate, she was astounded by what she discovered. A stray dog had adopted an abandoned baby as her own. She immediately called 911 for help.
The infant, now known as Santino, was brought to the emergency department for rapid medical assistance. Alejandria told the story of the stray, and the doctors believe that if it hadn’t been for the dog’s heroic efforts, the infant would have died.
Santino was in remarkably good form for everything he’d gone through, due in large part to Way’s excellent care.
Police ultimately tracked down the baby’s mother, a 33-year-old Buenos Aires woman with eight other children. She was detained and accused of abandoning her newborn child.
Way was taken in by a nearby sanctuary, where she and her offspring would be tended for until they could be adopted. What an incredible tale all around!
